Movie Ratings on a Random Scale:
Moonrise Kingdom - 98 out of 109 - I won’t begrudge anyone that hates Wes Anderson movies. They are ridiculously quirky, sometimes can be slow moving, and they exist in their own bizarre world. That said, I LOVE Wes Anderson, and Moonrise Kingdom is yet another winner in my book.
The flick is populated with a heavy dose of Hollywood Heavy Hitters, from Bruce Willis, Bill Murray, Edward Norton, Frances McDormand, Tilda Swinton, Jason Schwartzman, and Harvey Keitel. However, the adults all play (hilariously) supporting roles in the love story of two oddball kids. Jared Gilman and Kara Hayward are play two completely misunderstood children trying to be forced to play roles they don’t want by adults they don’t like. The movie is about their (ridiculous) rebellion from what is expected, as the adults in the movie all seem unspeakably sad and want them to follow in the same sad path.
I can’t explain entirely why I loved this film, just that it’s one of my favorite movies I’ve seen this year. It’s silly and quirky and yet somehow also inspiring and heartwarming. I loved it. I think the best plan of action is to know as little as possible about it, which is why this review has been so vague, so as not to spoil anything about the world you are about to enter when you go see this flick. I do recommend that you go see it, though. And soon. It’s a lot of fun.
